What Mid Century Modern Design Gets Right (That We've Mostly Forgotten)
The appreciation for mid century modern design.

Mid Century Modern design isn't just a trend that keeps coming back. It never really left. And once you understand why, it's hard to look at a tapered walnut leg or a Sputnik chandelier without appreciating the philosophy behind it.
MCM emerged in the mid-twentieth century as designers started asking a rather crazy question for the time: what if beautiful things were also accessible? What if good design wasn't just for the wealthy, but for everyone? The result was a movement built around clean lines, natural materials, functional forms, and a deep appreciation and understanding of the relationship between indoor spaces and the natural world outside your doors.
What strikes me most about MCM is how human it feels. The furniture has legs so you can see the floor beneath it, which makes rooms feel open and airy. The materials are warm, there's nothing cold or synthetic about it (walnut, teak, wool, leather). The shapes are organic and sculptural without becoming tacky. Everything is designed to be lived in, not just looked at.
Compare that to a lot of modern design, which often prioritizes the photo over the experience. Spaces that look incredible in a shoot but feel shallow and lifeless once in them.
That's why I keep coming back to it, and why you'll see it woven through a lot of what I share here at Refined Comforts. Not as a rigid style rule, but as a north star. A reminder that the best design serves the people living with it.
And that your home, above all else, should feel like the best place to go home to.
